Noise can cause permanent damage if you have to shout over background noise to be heard, if it is painful to your ears, if it makes your ears ring, or if you experience decreased or muffled hearing for several hours after exposure to noise.
To protect yourself from noise:
- Wear hearing protection, such as headphones, earplugs or earmuffs when you are exposed to sounds louder than 85 dB for long periods of time.
- Lower the volume when listening to the TV, stereo or any device with headphones or earbuds, such as an MP3 player.
- Wear custom noise filters or solid earplugs at a concert or nightclub. Take breaks to allow your ears to rest and don’t stand near speakers.
- Wear headphones or solid earplugs when using noisy equipment such as drills, lawnmowers, etc.
