What is a toner and why do I need to use one?
A toner is a product that restores the pH balance of the skin after it has been disrupted by using a cleanser.
The skin is naturally acidic, about 5.5 on the pH scale. Most cleansers are basic or alkaline- well above the neutral pH of 7. When you wash your face, you remove the acidic layer of oil or “acid mantle” that protects your skin from microorganisms and bacteria and your skin is left unprotected and dry. If you have normal to oily skin, your skin will produce excess amounts of oil to compensate. If your skin is already dry, it loses luster and aging can become more apparent.
Your toner restores normal acidity when applied after cleansing. Your skin maintains moisture without over producing oil and the acidity prevents overgrowth of bacteria and yeast. Your toner should be used twice a day after cleansing and before moisturizer or sunscreen.
